Coin Description

VERY CHOICE LUSTROUS SURFACES. BEAUTIFUL GOLDEN GLOW SHOWING REFLECTIVE MIRRORED FIELDS.

The 1801 was produced in greater numbers (44,344 pieces) than any other United States Eagle of the 1795-1804 era.  Interestingly, examples of this delivery are rarer in today's market than those of the lower-mintage 1799, so it seems that attrition took a substantial toll on this early 19th century issue.  The popularity of the 1801 among circulated and Mint State type collectors places strong demand on survivors, with the result that they rarely remain in the open market for long.  Like all early U.S. gold issues, the 1801 Eagle is conditionally challenging.  Examples are infrequently offered finer than BU and rarely encountered in Gem Mint State.

Bring This Coin to Life
In 1801, a remarkable year in American history, Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated as the third President of the United States, signifying a crucial change in the nation's political landscape. This event marked the first peaceful transfer of power between different political parties, exemplifying the maturing democratic principles of the young nation. Simultaneously, the appointment of John Marshall as the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court was a defining moment for American jurisprudence. Marshall's tenure would go on to establish the Supreme Court as a coequal branch of government, significantly shaping the interpretation and application of the U.S. Constitution for generations. Furthermore, the year saw the inception of the New York Evening Post, one of America's oldest continuously published newspapers. Its first edition marked the beginning of a legacy in journalism, providing critical news and shaping public opinion in the burgeoning republic. Overseas, Count Alessandro Volta invented the battery, which laid the foundation for the development of electrical power. This invention led to the development of the field of electrochemistry and practical applications for electricity. These events collectively represent a transformative period in U.S. history, laying foundational aspects of American governance, law, and media that continue to influence the nation's course.
