Coin Description

Well struck with lustrous surfaces. Just 12 coins graded higher at PCGS..

the 1863 is the third rarest of the 17 type i double eagle deliveries from the philadelphia mint.  survivors of this 142,790-piece delivery are elusive in all grades and particularly challenging to locate above ef.  in the 2002 book "an insider's guide to collecting type i double eagle," authors douglas winter and adam crum sum up this issue's rarity quite nicely when they state: "perhaps the strongest statement one can make about the rarity of the 1863 double eagle is that the finest business strike in the fabulous harry bass collection, sold at auction between 1999 and 2000, was a cleaned extremely fine."  to the best of our knowledge, the 1863 has never been widely represented in any hoards that have entered the market from time to time over the years.  even the shipwreck of the s.s. Republic has yielded only 26 examples in grades that range from au-58 through ms-63.  (for comparative purposes, we report that more than 300 examples of the 1865 have so far been discovered as part of the same treasure.)

Bring This Coin to Life
In 1863, a year of significant developments in American history, several notable events took place that would leave a lasting impact. One of the most important was the establishment of the National Academy of Sciences on March 3, 1863. Signed into being by President Abraham Lincoln, this organization was created to provide independent, objective scientific advice to the nation. The establishment of the National Academy of Sciences underscored the growing importance of scientific inquiry and innovation in the United States, laying a foundation for future scientific endeavors and policy decisions. The same year also witnessed the establishment of the Idaho Territory on March 4. This event marked a crucial step in the westward expansion of the United States, contributing to the nation's growth and development. The creation of the Idaho Territory reflected the ongoing movement towards the exploration and settlement of the American West, a key aspect of American history during this period. Furthermore, 1863 was notable for President Abraham Lincoln's declaration of a national day of Thanksgiving. Proclaimed to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November, this declaration set the stage for what would become the modern Thanksgiving holiday, an integral part of American culture. This holiday has since become a time for Americans to express gratitude and come together with family and friends, symbolizing unity and national thanksgiving. Additionally, while the Morrill Act, which led to the creation of numerous land-grant colleges, was signed into law in 1862, its implementation began in 1863. This act represented a significant advancement in higher education, with a focus on agriculture, science, and engineering. It played a pivotal role in the democratization of education in the United States, enabling a larger segment of the population to access higher education and contributing to the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. These events from 1863 collectively highlight a year of educational, cultural, and territorial advancement, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of the United States during a period of significant change and growth.
