Coin Description

ARROWS. GEM SURFACES WITH BLUISH ROSE TONING. ONLY TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER AT PCGS. CAC.

One of this writer's favorite issues in the entire Seated Half Dollar series of 1839-1891, the 1874-CC is one of only two Carson City Mint deliveries of the Arrows, Motto type.  As such, examples enjoy heightened demand among mintmarked type collectors.  The 1874-CC is also a very rare issue, however, and we would be remiss if we did not report that most of the demand for this issue stems from advanced collectors of Seated Liberty coinage.

Only 59,000 Half Dollars were struck in the Carson City Mint during 1874, and virtually the entire mintage found its way into circulation shortly after minting.  Mint State survivors are of the utmost rarity, and even circulated examples are very scarce-to-rare depending on their proximity to the Choice AU grade level.  Clearly, this issue suffered heavily due to the lack of numismatic interest among Americans who lived out West during the 1870s and 1880s.
