Coin Description

WELL STRUCK AND LUSTROUS. ONLY 10,000 STRUCK. ONLY A SINGLE MS61 COIN GRADED HIGHER. CAC.

With only 10,000 coins struck, the 1874-S would be a rare Eagle even had it been struck during an era when S-mint gold coins did not see that much circulation.  On the frontier, however, gold coins of all denominations were distributed quite widely, and few examples of any S-mint Eagle from the 1870s have survived in Mint State.  In the specific case of the 1874-S, no Mint State pieces are accounted for in today's market.  Even AUs are extremely rare coins, and the typically offered survivor is a well-worn VF or EF.
