Coin Description

GEM SURFACES. THE GEM IRIDESCENT PATINA ON THE OBVERSE ALONG WITH THE SATIN WHITE LUSTROUS REVERSE LEADS ONE TO ASSUME IT IS AN ORIGINAL "ROLL END" SPECIMEN. TIED FOR THE HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS.

The popularity of this issue with numismatic buyers stems largely from its status as the first Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar.  Coins of all denominations that bear the unique, seemingly magical, double-C mintmark of this famed branch mint have long enjoyed a strong following among collectors and investors.  Among early-date Carson City Mint Morgans, the '78-CC Morgan is encountered with less frequency than the 1882-CC, 1883-CC and 1884-CC.  Most survivors of this first-year issue are Mint State, but most also display numerous detracting abrasions that preclude a grade above the BU or Choice level.  Gems are quite scarce from a condition standpoint, pieces in MS-66 are rare and Superb Gems are exceedingly so.
