Coin Description

WELL STRUCK LUSTROUS SURFACES. THE ORIGINAL MINTAGE WAS A MERE 751. LESS THAN 100 SPECIMENS BELIEVED TO EXIST TODAY IN ALL GRADES.

The Philadelphia Mint struck only proof Double Eagles in 1882 and 1883, but it did produce business strikes in 1885.  In this case, however, the mintage amounted to a mere 751 pieces - a paltry total that confirms the 1885 Liberty Double Eagle as one of the rarest coins in the entire 19th century U.S. gold series.  Only 70-80 coins are believed to have survived, most of which grade AU-50, AU-53 or AU-55.  These coins will typically display numerous detracting abrasions on one or both sides, and the 1885 is easily one of the most challenging Double Eagles to locate with strong eye appeal.  In high grades, the 1885 is rarer than the 1892 and such highly regarded Carson City Mint issues as the 1879-CC and 1891-CC.

Bring This Coin to Life
In 1885, the United States experienced a year brimming with cultural and technological milestones, underscoring the nation's innovative spirit and its burgeoning role on the global stage. Notably, June of that year marked the arrival of the Statue of Liberty, a monumental gift from France, in New York Harbor. This iconic symbol of freedom and democracy, although not assembled and dedicated until the following year, signified the deep bonds of friendship between the two nations and became a beacon of hope for millions. In the realm of medicine, Dr. William W. Grant made a significant breakthrough by performing the first successful appendectomy in Davenport, Iowa, on December 6, pioneering a surgical technique that would save countless lives in the years to follow. The literary world was enriched by Mark Twain's publication of "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," a novel that not only became an American classic but also offered profound insights into society and human nature through its vivid depictions of life along the Mississippi River. Additionally, the year witnessed the completion and dedication of the Washington Monument, honoring the legacy of George Washington as a founding father and the nation's first president. This architectural marvel stood as a testament to American ingenuity and perseverance. Together, these achievements from 1885 highlight a dynamic period in American history, characterized by significant advancements in technology, culture, and social progress, reflecting the nation's capacity for innovation and its profound impact on shaping modern life.
