Coin Description

HIGH RELIEF. WIRE EDGE. GEM SURFACES.

Few numismatists can argue that the Ultra High Releif Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of, if not the most beautiful coin ever struck in the United States Mint.  Unfortunately, the design was in no way satisfactory for either regular-issue production or commercial use.  Nevertheless, by the end of August, 1907 Saint-Gaudens was dead and President Roosevelt was growing impatient over the fact that the new Double Eagle was not ready for large-scale production.

Faced with pressure from the executive office, Mint officials had little choice but to press the second version of Saint-Gaudens' design into use.  This is the High Relief Double Eagle, production of which commenced in late August or early September with the delivery of 500 examples.  The design proved an immediate success for presentation purposes and as a keepsake, an additional 12,367 examples being struck from November 23, 1907 through January 6, 1908.  Once again, however, the Mint was forced to strike each example multiple times on the medal press in order to bring up a sufficient amount of detail.  The coins were also impractical for long-term production because the design was still in too high a relief to serve well in commercial channels.  It should come as no surprise to read, therefore, that the High Relief Double Eagle yielded to the Low Relief (read: Arabic Numerals/No Motto variant) before the end of 1907.

Since most examples were saved at the time of issue, the High Relief Double Eagle is actually a plentiful coin in Mint State.  The issue's status as the only realistically obtainable representation of one of the earliest Saint-Gaudens' designs, however, guarantees strong prices for problem-free examples that appear in the market.  There are two varieties of this issue: most examples display a fin or wire rim, but the coins struck after about December 20, 1907 possess a flat rim.  While the latter is rarer, both varieties usually command a similar premium.

Bring This Coin to Life
The year 1907 was a landmark year in American history, marked by significant developments in statehood, technology, photography, and architecture. One of the most notable events was the admission of Oklahoma as the 46th state of the United States. This transition from Indian Territory to statehood represented a pivotal moment in the nation's growth and expansion. In the realm of domestic technology, 1907 witnessed a groundbreaking invention that would transform household chores forever: the first electric washing machine, invented by Alva J. Fisher. This remarkable innovation paved the way for modern convenience in home life, revolutionizing the way laundry was done and marking a significant step forward in household technology. The same year also saw the introduction of the Autochrome Plate, the first commercially successful color photography process. Although developed by the Lumière brothers in France, its impact was felt worldwide, including in the United States. This innovation in photography brought color to what had previously been a monochromatic world, allowing people to capture and preserve life's moments in a way that was closer to reality. Another highlight of 1907 was the opening of the Plaza Hotel in New York City. This iconic hotel quickly became a symbol of luxury and elegance and has since been a witness to numerous historical events and a fixture in New York's cultural landscape. Together, these events and innovations of 1907 demonstrate the diverse and transformative nature of that year in American history.
