By 1921, the United States' booming World War One economy had gone bust.  As such, there was very little need for new Half Dollars in the avenues of commerce that year.  (Another possible explanation for the limited mintage of 1921-dated Half Dollars that is seldom proferred is that all three operating mints were busy striking vast quantities of Morgan Silver Dollars.)  The San Francisco Mint struck just 548,000 Half Dollars that year.  While this total is greater than that of the 1921 and 1921-D, the 1921-S is the most challenging 1921-dated Half Dollar to locate at or above the Extremely Fine grade level.  (Yes, we said Extremely Fine, as in the circulated grades of EF-40 and EF-45.)  Mint State 1921-S Walkers are very rare, which suggests that few examples were set aside at the time of delivery.  Writing in 1993, Bruce Fox states, "Fully struck [G]ems might not exist."

Bring This Coin to Life
The year 1921 was a remarkable period of innovation and cultural evolution, marked by significant milestones in various sectors that had a lasting impact on society. One of the most notable events of this year was the pioneering role played by KDKA in Pittsburgh, the first American radio station to start regularly scheduled news broadcasts. This development not only signaled the dawn of a new era in broadcast journalism but also revolutionized the way news was disseminated, bringing immediacy and broader reach to news coverage. This transformation in mass media profoundly affected the public’s access to information and the speed at which it was received. Simultaneously, 1921 witnessed the birth of the fast-food industry in the United States with the founding of White Castle in Wichita, Kansas. Recognized as the first fast-food chain, White Castle's introduction of quick, affordable, and standardized food offerings set a template that would be emulated and evolved by countless other fast-food enterprises in the decades to follow, reshaping the American culinary landscape. Furthermore, 1921 was the year when the Band-Aid was invented by Earle Dickson, an employee at Johnson & Johnson. Initially created to assist his wife with minor injuries, the Band-Aid evolved into an indispensable component of first aid, revolutionizing wound care and personal health management across the globe. This invention epitomized the spirit of practical innovation and care that characterized many of the advancements of the era. Together, these developments from 1921 underscore a period of dynamic change and progress, reflecting the forward-moving spirit of the early 20th century. Each milestone, whether in media, food industry, sports, or healthcare, played a crucial role in shaping modern society and its future trajectories.
