"This is the first time these coins have been exhibited together in the Bay area. All five are in mint state, and four are from the renowned John J. Ford Collection. The display will be presented courtesy of Steven L. Contursi, the President of Rare Coin Wholesalers," said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.
The five coins in the special exhibit are:
- 1652 Massachusetts Willow Tree Sixpence, graded PCGS MS-64 and from the John J. Ford Jr. Collection, the finest of only 14 known surviving examples of this type.
- 1662 Massachusetts Oak Tree Twopence (small 2), graded PCGS MS-65 and also from the Ford Collection, and the finest known example.
- 1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Sixpence, graded PCGS MS-62 from the Ford Collection, and believed to be the finest known.
- 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence (pellets at trunk), PCGS MS-63, the finest known.
- 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling (no pellets at trunk), PCGS MS-65 and from the Ford Collection, the finest known.
More than 500 dealers will be buying and selling rare coins, bank notes, stamps and postcards, historical documents and other collectibles. Many dealers will provide free, informal appraisals for the public's collectibles. The Cupertino Coin Club will display educational exhibits.
Superior Galleries of Beverly Hills, California will conduct the official rare coin auction during the Santa Clara show. A children's treasure hunt will be conducted between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday, November 18, and a gold coin door prize will be awarded each day of the four-day show.
Public hours are Thursday, November 16, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $6 (good for all four days); $3 for seniors (65 and up) and children 8 to 16; children 7 and under admitted free.
