(Long Beach, CA) -- A multi-million dollar educational display of California Gold Rush era treasures will be exhibited during the Long Beach, Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, June 1 - 3, 2006.
The exhibit showcases the finest known 1850 Baldwin & Co. "Horseman" $10 and other gold coins as well as gold bars from the 1857 sinking of the S.S. Central America.
There also will be examples of antique tools used in the lost art of hand-engraving coin dies.
Open to the public, the three-day collectibles show will be conducted in the Long Beach, California Convention Center, 100 S. Pine Ave.
"There also will be a $700,000 display of the finest known set of 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition commemorative coins along with historic documents related to the set. A third exhibit at the June Long Beach Expo will feature the two finest known sets of mint state Eisenhower dollars listed in the Professional Coin Grading Service Set Registry™, including spectacularly toned specimens from the so-called Peacock Hoard," said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.
A public seminar with tips about online buying and selling of collectibles will be conducted by eBay at Noon, Friday, June 2, as one of nearly a dozen educational programs and meetings to be conducted during the show. A children's treasure hunt will be held Saturday, and a gold coin door prize will be given away each day.
The Long Beach Expo features rare coins, paper money, postage stamps, postcards, autographs, historical documents, antiques and estate jewelry.
"The Gold Rush era exhibit will be presented by Monaco Financial of Newport Beach and includes one of the most beautiful coins ever made during that historic territorial era, the California Horseman," said Gillio
The $10 denomination gold coin made in 1850 by San Francisco jeweler, Baldwin& Co., is graded NGC MS-65. The design shows a man with a lasso on horseback.
"Less than two dozen examples of this coin are known today, and this will be the first public display in Southern California of the finest known example."
The display of the finest known set of Pan-Pac commemorative coins will be presented by Rare Coin Wholesales of Dana Point, California. The display will include the original copper and glass frame and original box that housed the coins when they were sold and a $200 invoice to a buyer in Kansas dated July 29, 1915 signed by Farran Zerbe. A well-known numismatic figure of the era, Zerbe was Chief of the Coin and Medal Department for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. His handwritten notation on the invoice indicates this was set number 6 out of 24.
Heritage Auction Galleries (www.HeritageGalleries.com) of Dallas, Texas will conduct a major sale of coins and bank notes during the show. George F. Kolbe Fine Numismatic Books of Crestline, California will conduct three auctions of books and manuscripts.
Many of the nearly 2,000 dealers at the show will provide free, informal appraisals for the public. The dealers will be buying and selling rare coins, paper money, postage stamps, postcards, autographs, historical documents, antiques and estate jewelry.
The public hours are Thursday and Friday, June 1 and 2, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday, June 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (The show is closed on Sunday.) A complete Schedule of Events can be found online at www.LongBeachShow.com.
