U.S. Treasury Brings $1 Billion Display To Atlanta

(Atlanta, GA) -- The U.S. Treasury Department will have a $1 billion public exhibit and many of the world’s most famous and valuable rare coins will be displayed in Atlanta for the first time during the National Money Show™ in the Cobb Galleria Centre, Halls C & D, 2 Galleria Parkway, April 7 – 9, 2006.

But it won’t cost a cent to see a billion bucks. The three-day educational event is free and open to the public, sponsored by the nonprofit, 33,000-member American Numismatic Association (www.money.org), the world’s largest collector organization devoted to coins, paper money, tokens and medals. 

Exhibits include a Bureau of Engraving and Printing display of genuine $100,000 bills, the highest denomination paper money ever made by the U.S. government; America’s first silver dollar struck in 1794; Civil War-era money; and the multi-million dollar nickel that was the object of a recent worldwide search.

“Many of the 500 professional numismatists attending the show will provide free, informal appraisals for visitors who bring in their old coins and paper money,” said Christopher Cipoletti, Executive Director of the Association.

A unique 1794 silver dollar will be one of the many colorful exhibits. Insured for $10 million, it is described by respected researchers as the very first silver dollar ever produced by the U.S. Mint. This is the first time this historic coin will be publicly displayed in Atlanta. 

“Two of the five-known 1913 Liberty Head nickels will be exhibited, including the previously missing $2 million coin that made international headlines after it was unsuspectingly kept in a closet for 41 years,” explained Cipoletti.

The United States Mint will showcase the new Jefferson nickels and the popular 50 State Quarters® program. The Georgia commemorative quarter-dollar was issued in 1999.

There will be demonstrations of an antique, one-ton, hand-operated U.S. Treasury Dept. printing press that was used to print paper money 150 years ago.

“Money is history you can hold in your hands,” said William H. Horton Jr., President of the American Numismatic Association. “We’ll have thousands of collectors and dealers from around the country, buying and selling items ranging in value from a few cents each to $1 million; from ancient money to just-minted Euros. There are educational seminars, exhibits, and a children’s treasure hunt with free prizes. You can see everything from a half-cent to a $100,000 bill, and it’s free.”

Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers of Dallas, Texas will conduct a multi-million dollar public sale of coins and currency, including a collection of rare gold coins struck at the Dahlonega, Georgia Mint in the mid 1800s.

The National Money Show™ is jointly hosted by the Georgia Numismatic Association and the Metropolitan Coin Club of Atlanta.

It will be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre Halls C & D, 2 Galleria Parkway, Atlanta, Georgia. Public hours are Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
